Next to the entrance of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel you will find the coat of arms of the Brotherhood of St. Christoph in Austria: the lamb of God, the Cross of Constance and three small crosses, symbolizing the Christian virtues faith, hope and love.

In 1386 Heinrich, a child from Kempten, built the hospice at the Arlberg massif. Countless travellers venturing the tedious path over the Arlberg massif who were looking for shelter found refuge from the elements at the small hospice in St. Christoph. Pope Boniface IX granted Heinrich the privilege of founding the Brotherhood of St. Christoph in Austria. Together with his brothers the former pig farmer roamed the mountains looking for lost and exhausted travellers. In the first winter of its existence members of the Brotherhood of St. Christoph saved seven men from certain death in the snow.
