The Arlberg region is the cradle of winter sports in Austria: on January 3rd in 1901 four skiing pioneers founded the legendary Ski Club Arlberg Austria at the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel in St. Christoph.

In the winter of 1900/01 four skiing aficionados set out on a skiing adventure that would write the history in the Arlberg region, Austria. Never before had a skier dared to best the slopes of the Arlberg massif at more than 1.800 metres above sea level.

During their skiing expedition to the snow covered slopes of the Arlberg massif the four winter sports pioneers paid the hospitable inn keeper of the hospice Mr. Trojer a visit. In jolly company they laid the foundations for the Ski Club Arlberg Austria on January 3rd in 1901, boasting more than 6.500 members today, among them 9 world champions and five Olympic champions.

The Ski Club Arlberg Austria is synonymous with Alpine skiing and the most famous skiing club in the world. Hannes Schneider, member of the Ski Club Arlberg founded the first ski school in Austria. Trude Jochum-Beiser won two gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games in 1948 and 1952 and added a further gold medal during the skiing world championships in Aspen in 1950.
